Key Characteristics

Geometric Precision: Unlike the curvilinear patterns of Odisha or Gujarati Ikkat, Pochampally is famous for its sharp, bold geometric designs (diamonds, squares, and stripes).

Fabric: Primarily woven in Mulberry Silk

The "Blurry" Effect: Because the design is dyed onto the threads before weaving, the edges of the patterns have a characteristic feathery or "hazy" look, which is a hallmark of authentic hand-dyed Ikkat.

2. The Weaving Process (Tie-and-Dye)

The technique is known locally as Chitki or Pogudubandhu.

Double Ikkat: Pochampally is one of the few places in the world that masters "Double Ikkat," where both the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads are resist-dyed. They must be aligned with mathematical precision on the loom so the patterns meet perfectly.

3. History & Recognition

GI Tag: Received the Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2005, protecting the craft from machine-made imitations.

UNESCO: It is featured on the UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites as part of India's iconic saree weaving clusters.
